Game 3: Bust your own Balls

Game 3 has us taking on Blue Ball Busters, who have got off to a slow start at 0-2-1 but look to be showing signs of improvement. They will be eager to get in the win column.

Game time is 7:20 this week, back on Riverside #1 where we will be reunited with our main man Shep behind the plate!

Hope to see you there.

Games 1 and 2 Review: You can't choke if you lose early

Well, we started off the season with some real barn burners, winning the first one 4-3 and losing the second one 6-5.

The first game we took advantage of a team that wasn't up on all the rules, jumping out to an early lead then rallying for a go-ahead win.

The game start with the return of Jason, who the squad warmly welcomed after a year over seas and recovering from a back injury. Although he did not lead off the game with a home run like some Hollywood movie, he did play some sick outfield and lift team spirits by his mere presence.

Angie then got the offense going early with a sweet triple, using her speed to zing around the bases. Allie then knocked her in with a hit to put us ahead just three batters into the game. Way to go A!. Who needs 12 steps?

As if that wasn't enough, Angie then went into the outfield for the first time and screamed right back at a screaming ball and made a super catch on a fly ball.

In the second inning Nate copied Angie's idea of getting a triple and almost ran out of breath. Luckily Lindsay and Mark followed with hits putting us up 2-0. Then in the fourth inning Nate got a flub hit and Lindsay kicked him around the bases again for a 3-0 lead.

In the top of the fifth, Team Foot Fetish finally got their bearings and then tied it up with a booming three-run homer.

In the bottom of the fifth though Jared responded with a lead-off single and then came all the way around and scored on Lisa's bunt to put Blue back in the lead, 4-3.

The team was then able to hold the lead behind a stellar defensive night!

Other highlights included;
Lisa 3 for 3 at the plate and typical eagle eye at third base!
Becca 2 for 3 and led the team in putouts at first base!
Ram was 1 for 3 with several good outfield catches!
Laura had some good kicks that didn't fall and was super trash talking the other team while she was catching!

Game 2 against the Cloverleafs was another fast start, as the team built a 5-0 lead before eventually falling short 6-5 after some lapses in the field. But hey, all the pressure of an undefeated season is off!

The game started a bit wacky as we took the field with just eight players. Luckily Becca and Kim finished their Riverside Park stroll just in time to take the field during the first inning and we held the Cloverleafs scoreless!

It was another fast start as Jason kicked in Andrew on a shot up the middle to make it 1-0. Then in the second inning Allie kicked in a run for a second straight game scoring Nate and then Chad an RKI in his season debut to stretch the lead to 3-0. In the fourth inning the lead was stretched out to 5-0 after Hilary (also season debut) and Chad strung together a pair of hits and then Angie's key bunt forced them into a throwing error knocking in two more runs.

After that throwing error though, their pitcher really settled in and we failed to advance a runner past second in the final three innings. Then a few key errors of our own and they were able to string together three-run innings in the top of the fifth and seventh.

A good effort overall though, and something to build on for next week.

Also special notes: Kim smoked the ball all night and went 2 for 4 but could've easily been 4 for 4. Andrew also played his first game of the year and after knocking off some rust singled and scored a run. Becca had a nice bunt in the fifth and just missed a potential game winner on a tough roll in the seventh!

Game 5 and 6 Preview: Fighting History with Payback

If we know one thing the past few years, it's that the Caps keep getting knocked out of the playoffs earlier than expected. The only surer thing is that if the Caps play a Game 7 on a Wednesday night that We Just Blue Ourselves kickball has a doubleheader we all lose all the games. Well, I'm sick and tired of it, so let's come to agreement with the Caps and all win our games on Wednesday.

Game one is 7:20 at Riverside, we are taking on the team we were ahead of 11-1 before the lights went out and then when I suggested we make it up later they were accusing me of trying to get a cheap win when all I really wanted was to make sure they didn't kill each other running into each other on the field. Time to show them a real win! Payback!

Game two is 8:10 at Riverside, we take on current second place team Better Late than Pregnant, who are riding a two game win streak. We were already be warmed up and they will be cold so we will have to try to jump on them early. Plus I heard they said are shirts were an ugly color. Payback!

Boston is a stupid place full of people who talk funny, eat chowder and drink Sam Adams. Go up to Beantown and kick some ass Caps!

Game 4 Review: Yuck

Well, all the mud wasn't really the ugliest part of the last game, a 15-5 loss (some shady couting maybe though). Hilary's mom wrote me a long letter to me about how our performance ruined her entire visit and overall impression of Maryland and kickball and humanity.

Stats are probably too bad to mention, and some people only got to bat once so I'm not going to bother with it this week. We shall never speak of this game again.

Game 4 Preview: Upset Alert!

OK, we are moving up the standings, including being tops in the division in runs per game. But before we get all high and mighty and go around celebrating our newfound success we should keep our eye out for Ball So Hard, who named themselves after this University or this T-shirt I saw someone wearing at a shopping mall in Glen Burnie.

They are 1-2 but they have already won a game 10-0 so I'm sure the talent is there, even if doesn't rest in original team-naming (seriously look at all the teams with some variation of the name). No underestimating. Or if you do, that is fine too, it is just kickball.

Gametime is 8:10, be there on time!

Nate

Game 3 Recap: Winning is the New Reality

"Sure, you might look like a bunch of drunken idiots in sapphire blue T-shirts.  But the only thing you are drunk on is notching victory after victory as you run to the championship of Federal Hill Wednesday JV Social Kickball Riverside Division. That and also you are probably drunk on beer. It's one thing I actually wouldn't pay to watch.

Great job racking up another win last week, a 7-2 trouncing of our former tormenters Do Work! We really ran the bases well and took advantage of their errors (like that ill-fated kick to third).

Sorry, behind on work and I got Charlie Sheen to show up and deliver the above post-game speech, almost as good as this one, so we will just have quick and dirty highlights this week.

* Becca: Lead-off smash double, two runs scored, including nice infield tag-up
* Erwin: Two hits, went to correct bag, great tag up effort that victim to their canon-armed third basemen (almost as strong an arm as white sleeves)
* Josie: Two sweet hits
* Matt: sac RBI and the win on the mound
* Angie: 2 for 2 in triumphant return
* Ram: First-inning RBI
* Lisa: 2 for 2, run scored
* Nate: 0 for 2, made some catches though
* Caitlin: Double and run scored
* Jim: Hit and an RBI
* Hilary: Kicking practice paid off: 2 for 2 with an RBI
* Jared: Back in action, reached both times
* Lindsay: Perfect 2 for 2

Game 3 Preview: Stop being so bossy

Hey guys,

We play 9 p.m. game at Riverside against Do Work! (their exclamation mark, not mine), who we were pummeled by a few years ago.

However, the tables have turned a bit and we currently own the largest run differential lead in the league while their squad has stumbled out of the gate at 1-2.

I'm sure they will be gunning hard to get back to the .500 mark and will no doubt make exclamatory demands all night. Please disregard them and their heckling 10-year-old bike riding fans.

Game 2 Recap: Kissing Your Sister with Benekicks

Despite a furious seven-run inning, we were only able to salvage a tie out of the last game. Unfortunately yours truly made a bit of a throwing boner, in gunning down a runner while letting the tying run score.
Nonetheless, a good effort after a three week layoff. And even a memorable hug/catch from Ram and Lindsay (that's how he proposed too!)
Other highlights:
We also got a nice reminder about touching the outside bag when Erwin got ripped off from a hit but hitting the white. Otherwise a perfect day at the plate in his season debut, including taking over the team lead in walks.
Lisa put on a bunting clinic, going 2 for 3.
Becca got a sac RBI in the fourth.
Matt was 2 for 3, including a two-run double down the line.
Allie took over several coaching duties and continued her streak of scoring a run in every game.
Andrew knocked in a run.
Hilary was one for two and certainly would have had another if we played extra innings.
Ram was also one for two and knocked in a run.
Linday followed suit going one for two, and was the only one to get a hit in the third inning.
Jim hit the 50 percent clip at the plate and also made some slick throws in the field.
Kim was one for two, and the one out was a pretty darned good kick.
Nate was also one for two, and scored the first run of the game.
Laura had a sweet bunt that set Nate from first to third, and she scored a run.
Josie kicked in a run in her first ever at bat.
Caitlin got a hit and showed her speed rounding the base paths for a run.

Bonus recap: Lights out!

Way back on March 14 there was a moment that will live forever in WJBO lore, 12 consecutive hitters reached base safely, as we racked up nine runs in the first inning while they were only able to record one force out. The only thing stopping us from scoring was a lack of light, tricky beast that she is.

There was solace to be found despite the cancellation, in addition to going 2 for 2, Ram showed us all about this app that shows the constellations and then Lindsay used the knowledge to get the answer right on final Jeopardy and won a record $56, 234 and got a photo with Alex Tribec. Drinks on Lindsay! Also the real reason Angie has been away is that she bought that lottery ticket at the 7-11. Houses on Angie!

Game 2, Second Try, Preview: Race against the Rain

Looks like we have two opponents this week, the weather and the first-place Friends with Benekicks.

First, it looks like storms will be moving in, but since we are the early game hopefully we can beat the rain -- we all the know that we suck in the competition with the ligths.

For the other opponent, we are taking on the 2-0 Friends with Benekicks. Of course most of us are getting too old to have friends with bene-anything, but we will have to use our experience to best these young hooligans. After all, we've outscored our opponents 23-4 without even using up all of our outs in the 1 1/3 games we've played.

OK, that's all I got tonight, hope to see you Wednesday.

Undefeated ... clap, clap, clap-clap-clap

Hey everyone, way to get a win in the season opener -- just the second time in franchise history!

The team in black definitely gave us some trouble, but we were able to run our way into a big seven-run inning that helped us secure a 10-3 win.

Most memorable moments included the first time I'd ever seen an umpire recognize our greatness and let the other team bat two innings in a row. Way to get six big outs defense!

Also, we forged the signatures of everyone who wasn't there to sign the roster. Don't worry there is plenty of time to thank us for signing away your right to sue the league and city over an injury!

Lots of personal highlights to include:

* Ram. Ridiculous. Led off the season with a hit, reached base three times and brought the shirts despite verbal abuse from kickball staff over a dispute test result.
* Chad. Confounding. Played stellar shortstop and scored the first of the runs in our big innning.
* Hilary. Histrionic. 2-3 with a run scored.
* Matt. Majestic. Got the win on the mound, kicked in a run even though it was kicked in the air, scored, coached a mean third base.
* Andrew. Awesome. Doubled and scored a run.
* Allie. Amazing. Scored first run of the season (ya Ms. Runs!) and knocked in another run.
* Jim. Jolting. Told everyone what to do, dumped out the cooler (twice), got two hits, scored a run, two innings of solid relief and stopped swearing in time to stay in the game.
* Nate. Nasty. Scored two runs, kicked ball into opposing dugout twice to really rattle our opponents.
* Caitlin. Cataclysmic. Refrained from punching Jim, kicked in first run of the season and scored.
* Becca. Bodacious. Tripled in a run then scored the trying run, made a great sac fly attempt and nice catch in the field.
* Laura. Legendary. Made debut on team and kicked for a hit.
* Lisa. Lavish. A pair of perfect bunts including a run knocked in.
* Angie. Awe-inspiring. Coached up runners on the base, kept the sideline organized, gave Nate much needed lesson on how to lead a cheer.

Also, our teammates trivia squad secured a playoff win, so if you need to cheat on a test anytime soon they may be good people to sit next to.

See you Wednesday.

Nate
