Game 7 Recap: Best Win Ever

Well, the playoffs get under way this week and we will be on the outside looking in. However, we did a great job of rallying to win our final two games and nearly get our first bid. The last game was particularly memorable as we got our biggest win ever.

In case you forgot, we were able to build a big lead early, after scoring one in the first, three in the second and six in the third to build a 10-0 lead. Seal lost his bid for a perfect game in the bottom of the third, but we were still able to hold on for a 13-2 win.

There were quite a few great individual performances, here's the highlight reel:

Mike led off our big third inning with a hit and then scored on a sac fly. He was 2-4 with two runs scored and was firing peas across the year. Hollywood execs are in talks to make a "Rookie of the Year" sequel based on young Mike's fine first season.

Like Deion Sanders so many years ago, Jason had no problem making it to games before jet setting around the country. Like Popeye popping a can of spinach, our vaunted number two kicker powered down a Red Bull and Vodka and then powered the offense. In his first at bat he did some fine dancing around the ball to draw a walk, before adding a sac RBI in the third. Crook has also been nominated for drunkest player after the game.

What a night for Buntin' Becca! She had been feeling down because she had missed our previous two wins, but in this game she made sure she would experience victory and played a little rough. At the plate, B-Doc was a perfect 4-4 again at the plate scoring two runs. She also had a good game at third, eyeing up which bunts were going to roll foul.

As if one seventh inning home run wasn't enough, Jeff ran the team's steak of games with last innign homers to two. In all, he tallied 4 RBI's on the night and made several good catches in left. He also endured my raid on his house as I was searching for my cell phone.

Andrew also had two hits in a score, and earned a hold in a relief appearance. Even more importantly, he was tracking down fly balls like a mad men in right field, making him likely to earn a gold glove. After the game, he also shared his secrets of his fantasy football success.

Angie had a big night at the plate, going 3-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Even better was her throws back to the pitcher as the catcher.

Seal was also 2-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. He also won his second game on the mound as he retired the side in the first two innings. You knew he was going to be on that night, just watch his confidence striding to the mound.

Mark made the move to the left side of the outfield and made some good catches. Even better, he was a perfect 3-3 at the plate with two runs. I was going to describe Mark's munting skills too, but when I Googled munting I found some disgusting definitions of the word; search at your own risk.

Jackie returned after a series of early games and was a big-time contributor. She was 3-3 including a 2-RBI double that pushed us ahead 10-0. She also played a mean game at first and I think recorded a key put-out on a throw from Mike.

Tim was also back and got a hit, scored and created a signature style with his over-the-shoulder outfield catches. His and Andrew's outfield play on the right side was very key in keeping Kick in the Grass down.

Nate broke out of a slump with two hits and two RBIs, and most importantly dried out the scorebook after the other team kicked beer on it. He then battled Jason for drunkest person of the game. Those bastards!

Allie didn't have her best hitting day, but did call a great game behind the plate and really worked the umpire to get strikes. She is also in the running for Assistant Coach of the Year for the crafty way she drew up the defense on her iPod touch.

Well, it was a very fun season and we set a franchise record for wins. See you at the end of the year party Dec. 12!

Game 6 Recap: The Bunt Heard 'Round the World

It's hard to know where to start in talking about last week's wild win. With Megan's gritty performance behind the plate with a broken leg? Mark's mad munting skills? How about Michael "getting in Angie's pants"?

I guess I'll start at the end, when we scored 4 runs in the bottom of the seventh for walk-off 13-12 win over the Electric Mayhem capped by one of the wildest plays I've ever seen.

We entered the bottom of the seventh inning trailing 12-9 and slightly reeling having squandered an early 5-0 lead. Nonetheless we kept our heads up. Nate led off the inning with a double to left field and Allie bunted on safely. The comeback bid nearly stalled as we got down to our final out, but Andrew came up with a clutch single to score Nate and cut the lead to 12-10 and put the tying run on base.

That brought Angie to the plate, who laid down a brilliant bunt and sprinted down the line to force a quick throw. The defender made a quick throw indeed -- and it went over the first basewoman and all the way into right field. Angie trucked around the bases not even hearing the team screaming from the bench to score. The right fielder picked up the ball but Angie saw third base coach Mike pointing to home. She turned the corner, keenly aware of been thrown out with the ball on the way to the plate just an inning before, but this time she raced across the plate ahead of the throw where she was mobbed by the team in victory.

There were plenty of great moments for everyone though, as we owe special thanks to Chandra and Megan for filling in so we had nine.

Mark led off for us and got things started with his first of two munt singles before scoring the first of two runs in our big first inning.

Andrew had a great day at the plate, going 4 for 5 with 4 runs scored and an RBI. His five runs generated was more than a third of our offense!

Even before getting the game winner, Angie was red hot at the plate, going 5 for 5 with bunt hits, a triple, another single and four total runs knocked in!

Seal contributed to the win at both the mound and the plate, earning the win and helping the cause with a pair of RB-I's, including plating the game's first run.

Behind Seal's pitching performance was Mike's defense at shortstop, where he made several catches despite having to play in his work socks and a pair of black capri pants he had to borrow from Angie 'cause he forgot a change of clothes. His offense was also appreciated as he went 3 for 4 with an RBI.

Chandra was a game contributor as she precision bunted her way on base three times (I think she's holding weekly clinics if anyone is interested in learning her craft). The feat was especially impressive because Nate mispronounced her name so many times it was pretty good that she made it up to bat on time at all.

Coach Nate also broke out of a bit of slump with a pair of hits and runs, including a seventh-inning double.

Nate was not the only hot bat from the west of Fort Ave. though. Allie singled in a pair of runs in the firt before bunting safely and scoring in our winning seventh inning rally. That stretched her consecutive games scoring streak to three!

Three cheers for Megan, who suited up to play despite having a stress fracture in her leg so we wouldn't have to take an automatic out or play short in the field. Although she was couldn't kick or run due to her injury, she did a hell of a job working the pitch count and psyching out the defense with her keen eye.

Week 5 Preview: Another Crew to Do

Alright everyone, we are set to take on our second straight crew, the Booze Crew (2-2). Everyone knows we are undefeated against crews this year, having beat Brew Crew last week, but we are playing in our traditionally troubled 6:30 spot.

Perhaps we have done so poorly in the early game due to not having enough time to drink beforehand, so I am encouraging everyone to bring a flask to work and drink all day. I will also bring our official Pabst 30 Pack in case you need a chaser for your sambuca, or absenthe or one of Devin's famous warm scotch and milk Hot Totties or whatever it is you put in your flask.

This game is very important because a win here would put us squarely in playoff contention. With our offense starting to get hot we should definitely score runs and take in a win if we continue to limit errors.

Go Blue!

See you Wednesday!

Week 4 Review: Walk-off Win #1

For those of you who weren't there, last week's win was one of the best I've ever been a part of. It was especially impressive since we were sitting at the bar at 8:50 with only eight players.

I would re-tell all the details but I misplaced the scorebook in the drunken revelry following the game. Despite some factual gaps, I can tell you this: We jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first, weathered their comeback attempt as they tied it 7-7, then Jeff knocked in Jackie in the bottom of the seventh for an 8-7 upset victory.

There were many a highlight, including the debut of Rub bartender Erin playing for us, as well as Jason's out-of-town ringer Joe (both caught outs and reached base safely). Jason went 4-4 himself, as did Jeff who I think also had 4 RBIs, including the game winner.

I think everyone else had at least one good catch or kick, but like I said I can't get all the details down unless I find the scorebook. Sorry.

Week 4 Preview: Playing short, finishing tall

OK everyone, it sounds like we may be playing with the bare minimum this week when we take on the Brew Crew at 9 p.m. at Riverside Park.

The Brew Crew is 1-2; it's hard to get a read on them because their two losses are to undefeated teams while their win is against a team with one win.

FYI, the teams we lost to have a combined record of 6-3; the team we lost to 3-1 is actually undefeated.

Anyway, as mentioned below, our offense was about to break out at the end of the last game and I think this will be our week. We just need to try to kick line drives or hard grounders, especially if the wind is blowing in.

Pre-game festivities are set to begin at 7:30 p.m. at Rub since it's easiest for parking and walking over to the field. Where to go post-game is up for a vote. See everyone tomorrow! Go Blue!

Week 3 Review: The Guarantee

Well, not everyone can be Joe Namath and come through with guaranteed wins, so I guess I'm more along the lines of that guy no one remembers who said the Steelers would beat the Pats in 2007.

And even though the Pabst may not have improved anyone's playing ability, it hopefully numbed your eyes to the sight of all those pale legs we were facing.

In the end, we faced the same basic problems in the 7-2 loss as the previous week: A couple overthrows led to a big inning and our offense got off to a slow start.

That said, we did start to kick safely late in the game. We reached based safely seven times and had it not been for a hard line drive that turned into a double play and a play where the third basewoman was allowed to block out Becca we would ave wound up with way more than the two runs.

Also, special props to Tim, who got a hit in his first at-bat, caught the first fly ball sent his way and bought a round of beers for the whole team at the bar. Now that's a first game!

Also, Jeff earned a smiley face and Mark earned a lightning bolt on defense from Jason; I don't remember what for because it was a week ago, but great job!

Week 3 Preview: Popeye's Secret Recipe

Hey all,

We're unfortunately off to an 0-2 start and things are not about to get any easier when we visit How I Met Your Rubber (1-1) at 7:20 p.m. on Wednesday at the same Riverside field as the first two games.

Even though it won't be easy, everyone should be confident that we will win this game. I think we will have everyone there and with a defensive effort like the one we had the first we week I am guaranteeing that we will win. The team looked a lot better at the plate last Wednesday and this is the week that we put it together.

I also have one more secret weapon: Pabst Blue Ribbon. Both we and PBR have the same trademark color so officials from the company have approached me about being the team's official sponsor. The deal is for as long as we keep winning, I will keep bringing free Pabst from Wells Liquors. How's that for a contract incentive?

I think we are planning to go straight to the fields since we are playing one of the earlier games, but we will try to get there a bit early if anyone wants to tailgate at the field. Will be up for going out after with my eye finding a place with the Twins and Tigers on TV.

See everyone Wednesday!
Nate

Game 2 Recap: Sister Act 3, The One Where WJBO loses their second game

Well, it seemed inevitable that God would have his revenge on Andrew for all his flip Jesus-related fantasy football team names. That it would come in the form of a nun and her team of bible-preachin', God-fearing kickball squad surprised even myself.

For those of you who missed it, we found out that it is in fact possible for us to lose our second game of the season as we fell to the Holy Rollers (no, they weren't named after Ned Flanders's bowling team) 12-6.

Then I went all Jim Mora about the performance after the game, but it turns out that Mark was correct, it was not in fact our worst game ever. That still has to go down as the 15-0 loss.

But I'm not going to be all negative just because I'm a member of the mainstream media. To spin things positively I would just point out that had it not been for that inning where we tossed the ball all around the infield and they scored like 7 runs it actually could have been a good game. We just have to remember that making gambles on throws usually doesn't pay off it puts you in an even bigger hole.

We did have some offensive highlights too. Among them:
• Jason can now finally stop having all his conversations about his new dog and wedding planning. He can now talk about the time he scored three runs in a kickball game, 'cause that's what he did Wednesday. Good season opener Crook!
• Becca was a perfect 4-4 at the plate, including an RBI triple. She is now kicking .833 for the season! That is also our second straight game with one of girls getting a triple, so who says girls can only bunt?
• Mark exploited the walk rule so his keen eye allowed Angie a free pass as well that gave us a 1-0 lead.
• In his second ever game Mike found his stroke, going 3-3 with a run scored.

There were undoubtedly some other good plays too but it's been like a week and they are not immediately apparent from the score book. So let's keep the good plays coming and get back in the win column.

Game 1: Defense wins championships but not our first game; Week 2 Preview: Right where we want them

Well, we gave a great defensive effort in our first game, the only problem was had a hard time getting our kicks to land safely in fair territory.

No worries though as the 3-1 loss is probably just a sign of some rust. Still, credit is due to Angie for her nice triple and props to Seal for the SAC RBI in our seventh inning rally. Mark, Jim, Becca and Jeff also all kicked on base and Nate reached on an error by kicking the ball and convincing the pitcher it was too high to catch.

The defense was superb. I can't think of really any errors so keep up the good work in that regard.

Special thanks also goes to Megan for filling in and calling a good game behind the plate.

So, let's take that positive energy into our next game against the Holy Rollers. I'm not sure which kind of Holy Rollers they are: these, these or these.

Either way, they are 0-1 and after being off for two weeks, they will be plenty eager to get out their and redeem themselves. They will have a tough battle ahead though, as they catch in our second game, in which our franchise has never lost!

Pre-game begins at 7:30 and is at Rub, which is conveniently located a few feet from the field. Game time is 9 p.m. at Riverside. See ya there!

Fall 2009 Season Preview

Welcome back everyone for another season of Blue Ourselves kickball! The schedule is out, the fields are striped and we are ready to push for our first playoff bid.

First off, let's welcome our new faces for this year. We have added Mike Lawrence, who used to work with me at Wells Liquors, as well as Joi Butler and Tim Regan, who work with Jackie at Baltimore's finest new hotel, Hotel Monaco.

The biggest change this season is that our games are now at Riverside Park rather than Latrobe Park. The good news about this is we closer to more of the bars, but the bad news is that parking here can be kind of tough. You can get directions here. Do not park in the apartment complex lot, cars will get towed. You are best off trying to find a spot along Well Street or Johnson Street. You may be able to find off-street spots elsewhere but be careful not to park on a block that requires a permit (you'll see signs).

There are not any new rules this year, but it is a good idea to give them a quick look over before the season starts. Click here to view the rules. To that end, I also need everyone to sign the roster, which also serves as a waiver that states that you know the rules and won't sue anyone if you get hurt.

This has to happen before the first game, so if you aren't there I will forge it for you. Everybody let me know your status for Wednesday when you get the chance. Also, if there is any position you want to play, let me know.

Go Blue!

Game 6 Recap: A furious rally falls short

OK guys, last week we suffered a tough loss that eliminated us from the chance of finishing with a winning record, but we should build on our valiant comeback (I think the game is airing on ESPN Classic at 4 a.m. tomorrow morning). We should have the confidence to end the year on a high note and get a win against Blackout on what should be a beautiful night.

In case you forgot our epic 13-10 classic against the FYM All-Stars, it went something like this:

Once again we got off to a quick start. After Jim dropped in a single, Becca followed with a run-scoring triple despite being clothes-lined into a summersault by the opposing first baseman that looked something like this, only she was tougher. Mark then man-bunted his way to safety and Seal drove a strike into the outfield to give us a 2-0 lead.

FYM answered with two runs of their own in the top of the second, but the game remained pretty much a pitching duel until the fourth, when FYM decided to kick like five home runs over NAte's head into the weekly keg party in the alley to build a hefty 9-2 lead.

Blue would not be held down easily though. The next inning Andrew kicked a ball the hugged the right field foul line for a triple, and Megan followed with a single to cut the lead to 9-3. But that was just the start of the rally.

In the sixth, Becca and Mark led off the inning with back-to-back singles, followed by a 2-RBI hit by Angie, her second double of the game. Nate then knocked her in, and Jason got his third hit and Nate slid/rolled into home to cut the lead to 9-7. After a close out at first, Michael vowed revenge for losing his perfect average and stroked a two-out to kick to make it 9-8.

FYM had more rally in them, and they plated four runs in the top of the seventh to boost the lead back to 13-8. Not that Blue was done scoring. Jeff started a one-out rally with a single, followed by a bunt hit by Becca. Mark then joined the three-hit club with a run scoring single to make it 13-9. Seal followed with another RBI hit to make it 13-10 and bring the tying run the plate. Angie then kicked a drive to right but unfortunately it hung up rather than falling for another double and the last rally fell short.

It was a still a good effort, and if we don’t give up any 7-run innings tonight I’m sure we’ll be able to get the win and finish 3-4.

It looks like we should have enough as Angie went all Demolition Man and told her bosses "take this job and shovel it, I ain't missing the last game or team pictures."

See you tomorrow!

Coach Nate

Game 6 quick notes and Review of Game 5: The Game Against the Team Like Us

Hi everyone,

Looks like it will probably be another game-time decision by the league as to whether we will play this week. Even if it doesn't rain, the fields may be so wet from the last few days that they will be unplayable. I'll try to get out an update around 4 p.m.

If we do get rained out it may be OK, because we may be short players. As of now, here's what I have status-wise:

In:
Angie
Nate
Zack

Probable:
Allie

Maybe Late:
Jeff

Out:
Andrew
Jackie
Jim
Megan

Don't Know:
Becca
Jason
Mark
Michael
Noah
Seal

I still suspect we will have enough to play, though unless we can convince someone to help us re-create Ladybugs, we will probably have to go with just nine in the field.

Besides, being up against long odds is no problem for us. Just look at last week, when we were coming off our worst loss in franchise history and lately had spent more time getting drunk and watching the Caps at City Limits than getting drunk and getting ready to play kickball.

It certainly wasn't ideal weather either, nor were we used to having a classy keg party hosted by Drinkerz with a Kicking Problem being held in left field. Nonetheless, we came up with a big five-run inning to start the game and get us pumped, then crushed Balls and Dolls' comeback bid with a six-run seventh. The final tally was an 11-5 win.

Getting us started in that first inning with a lead-off single was Zack, who returned from a lovely Indiana vacation with a brand new tooth but the same old attitude. Zack went 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored and did his best Rickey Henderson impression by making effort-free catches in left field.
After the game, team statistician Andrew McLeod pointed out we are undefeated when Zack plays and proposed that he be fined if he ever misses another game. Zack was so distressed he chugged a beer faster than anyone at the bar.

Mark batted second, and 2 must be his favorite number because was 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI. He also stepped up by replacing our normal cheerleader, Lori, with new cheerleader Scrabble.

Becca batted third, and was 2 for 3 with a run scored. However, her best at bat may have been an out, when she duped Balls and Dolls with a sac bunt that moved the first two runners in scoring position. She also made several sick catches at first while Allie was on the DL.

After Becca had put Mark and Zack in scoring position, Andrew knocked them in, the first of 2 hits in the game. He also earned the pitching win, making him the winningest pitcher in team history, which has earned him the nickname of "Three Fingers" Andrew.

Nate did not have his best game at the plate, going just 1 for 4. During a tirade, he told Jason he would kick over his chicken wings again. However, that was all part of his coaching strategy, just like telling Becca to let a fair ball drop in foul. Despite the many gaffes, Sandstrom did catch all cans of corn kicked his way.

Megan returned from the Boston Marathon in tip-top shape, leading the team to run lines, wind sprints and crab walks on the sidelines before the game to intimidate Balls and Dolls. But that was far from her only contribution. Megan took a cue from Becca with a key first-inning sacrifice and, unlike the catcher on the other team, decided not to let balls roll past her on the other field. "That's what she said," Megan added.

Jeff broke out another intimidation strategy, kick some home runs. He lined up a three-run shot in the first inning before adding a single and scoring a run in the seventh. He also intimidated Balls and Dolls by charging their bunts and showing that sometimes you can throw to first.

Jason was clearly mad about the wing-kicking incident from two weeks ago and Nate's threat to do it again, especially with all those starving people he could ship them to in Africa. The result was he singled in the first inning and did an admirable job at the hot corner in the absence of regular 3B Matt Seal who was also on the DL last week. On the strength of his performance his agent was able to negotiate a later curfew and finish his cribbage game at City Limits.

Jackie showed up to the game in a motorcycle, sunglasses and her best Ricky Vaughn haircut. Balls and Dolls were so freaked out that they wouldn't even kick it to her in the outfield. But Jackie was not about to let them get away without feeling her wrath, she singled and scored a run in the seventh. Then to show there were no hard feelings she offered a D.D. program after the game.

You know the saying "save the best for last." That's what Angie Wanner did. The other team was all like "it's the last girl in the lineup we should move up and read newspaper film reviews." Little did they know Angie is our all-time home run leader among women and this whole batting last thing was a con. She got two hits and scored on the second, but just to show she was nice she didn't injure anyway who tried to bring a weak slide into her house at second base.

Another Game 5 preview

I hate to say this, but a month may elapse between our last and next kickball game. Although the next two days are supposed to continue in the summer-like pattern, forecasters are calling for Wednesday showers.

Should that prediction be wrong, we are slated to face Balls and Dolls at 7:20 p.m. on our regular field at Latrobe Park. They are also 1-3, though they have faced all the best teams. No word on whether Mark Hamill will be on the team as Nathan Detroit.

We'll see how the forecast looks on Tuesday night and I'll send out another e-mail looking for a head count.

Week 5 Preview: No, F Your M

Well, I'm going to put the chances of us playing this week at about 40 percent. It sounds like there is a good chance that in addition to raining all day today, it will probably rain most of tomorrow and some on Wednesday.

However, forecasts are sometimes wrong and maybe we will get a chance to get back out on the old ball field again. We are scheduled to start at 8:10 this week against FYM All-Stars. I'm not sure what FYM stands for, but I'm guessing it is something profane about our mothers.

I hope you're not going to let them talk about your mama that way. For all their sailor talk, the All-Stars are also 1-3 and they haven't even had to play Kick in the Box yet. And per the above clip, I will put a six pack of beer in all of your dog houses if we win.

We'll be at City Limits around 7 p.m. for pregame beverages. Rain or shine, the Caps are taking on the Rangers so I'll be there. I got six stitches in my face after a bad hop in the softball game, so just look for the guy who looks like this.

If everyone can e-mail me their status before the game it's appreciated because it's easier for me to lineup the defense. Zack is supposed to be back from Indiana today, so he is back if we can get the game in.

See you Wednesday!
Nate

Week 4 Review: Worst Episode Ever

Well, our last outing is almost two weeks behind us and hopefully we have all forgotten about the game and score.

The biggest bright spot was the stellar third base play by Matt Seal, who recorded 18 put-outs, the most in a kickball game since Orville "Sticky Hands" Johnston had 19 put-outs in a 1903 contest.

We also set or tied several other club records including the following"
• Fewest runs scored in a game (0)
• Largest margin of defeat (15)
• Most teammates hit in the head with a ball (1)
• Most easy force outs passed on in favor of throwing the ball at other team (2)
• Most pop-outs per inning played (2.4)

Now, let us never speak of that game again.

Week 3 Recap: "The Back Alley Bludgeoning" or "The Birthday Boy Curse"

Hi everyone,

I think Zack is out of town but can everyone else shoot me an e-mail to let me know their status for tonight (9pm kickoff, same field as all the other games at Latrobe).

As I write to you at this early hour it is only 36 degrees outside, but weather.com is calling for temps in the 50s tonight and only a slight chance of rain. Good thing because we learned that our opponents played much better in the mud than we did.

We also took some other lessons from last week's game:
• Popping out 35 times isn't a good strategy for scoring runs
• Let the ball roll foul!
• Seriously, don't pick it up if it's going to go foul
• Play's at second

Despite an 8-3 loss, we shouldn't hang our heads too low. We had to play them in the field closest to their home alley/shanty town and still mounted a comeback that put the tying run in the on-deck circle.

It was clearly a big game for them, if you remember their post-game celebration. And it is always had to beat a team who has a player whose birthday is night and who doesn't stop running. (Note: If it is anyone's birthday tonight, you should just start circling the bases as soon as you kick it.)

Looking back at the score book, it was easy to see that all players were still making contributions. Since I have to leave for a work in a little bit, we have a slightly truncated version this week.

• Mark did a great job of welcoming Jackie to the team by throwing to her on a force play at second, even though she was playing right-centerfield. He was also a contributor at the plate, going 2 for 3 with a run scored.
• Jeff went a perfect 3 for 3 at the plate and scored a run, and showed the kind of range in the outfield that hasn't been seen in South Baltimore since Mike Deveraux roamed Camden Yards.
• Angie went 2 for 3 and tried to fire up the team by getting mud on her face and letting Nate smear it on her forehead to make it war paint.
• Becca also went 2 for 3 and tried to class up our team with an official Blue Ourselves sweater.
• Megan was also among the girls producing offense, going 1 for 2 with a run kicked in.
• Seal also had a good night at the plate, going 2 for 3.

Pregame party starts at City Limits at 7:15. Like us, the Orioles will also be looking for their second win of the season. And if they were able to beat a $161 million pitcher, we shouldn't be afraid of a few farticles.

To prepare for the game, everyone should sing this song at work at some point today. You just need to change the lyrics to the following:

Something magic happens, every time you go
You make the magic happen, the magic of Blue Ourselves' Kickball!

When the game is close, and Blue is hot
There's a thundering roar from the bar next door to give it all they've got

And you never know who's gonna hear the call
Every game there's a different star
That's the magic of We Just Blue Ourselves Kickball!

Blue Ourselves Magic! Feel it happen!
Blue Ourselves Magic! Feel it happen!

W-E-J-U-S-T-B-L-U-E-O-U-R-S-E-L-V-E-S!

Magic! Magic! Magic! Magic!

Week 4 preview

Hi everyone,

Alright, after last week's loss I thought about giving a lecture like this one, but then I realized we are blue and not green. I otherwise endorse you adopting this coach's advice.

We play at 9 p.m. again this week, taking on My Farticles, Your Face. Based on these definitions of farticles, you are going to want to keep your face or any other of your body parts away from their asses (as opposed to other weeks).

I can also tell you that our farticle-firing opponent is 2-1. Like us, they lost to Kick in the Box and beat Red Balls and Vodka; their other win is against the last winless team, Balls and Dolls.

A win this week not only would allow us to double our victory total of last season, it would also get us back to .500 and in the thick of the race for second place (Kick in the Box pretty much has this league wrapped).

There is also no testing policy for performance enhancers in KLOB.

Go Blue Death!

Nate

P.S. Recap of last week's game: "The Back Alley Bludgeoning" or "The Birthday Boy Curse" (notice the lack of and "of," Grammar Officer Allie) can be expected tomorrow.

Week 3 Preview and Week 2 Recap or "How the Super Goldstar Lock of the Week Came Through" (retroactive to March 29)

Hi gang -

I guess everyone has probably had a hard time containing themselves all week after our thrilling 5-2 victory last week, but the weather forecast is calling for rain so we will see if we have to wait another week to get above .500.

Still, weather forecasts can be wrong (don't tell Andrew and Allie -- their dad is a meteorologist) and there's a chance we will still get in our game at 9 p.m. at Latrobe Park against Drinkerz with a Kicking Problem. We are on the same field we were the first two weeks.

Those of you on the team last year probably still remember that game, when we squandered a lead, came back only to fall on a walk-off sac fly to lose 10-9.

However, that was a 6:30 game, and we all know how much better we are at night games when we don't have to rush home from work and have a few drinks before the game.

The scouting report calls our next opponent the Oakland Raiders of the Federal Hill JV A kickball league: old but experienced, crafty but drunk, kicking for power yet likely to fall over, in but out, hot and cold (I've got to stop getting these things from those Hungarians.)

We are planning to get to City Limits at approximately 7:15 for pre-game, rain or shine. Our opponent also usually hangs out at City Limits, so if we get a staring match, a silent competition or a dance-off, remember it is they who are going down.

And fresh off last week's win, we should have confidence. Entering the Week 2 as a 3.5-run underdog against previously undefeated Red Balls and Vodka, famous Vegas bookie Sam "Ace" Rothstein picked We Just Blue Ourselves to win outright, pointing to their past Week 2 performances.

The blue-clad squad made 'Ol Ace look pretty good when Jim led off the game with a single in his first at bat of the year, then Andrew knocked him in for a 1-0 lead two batters into the game.

Jim went 3 for 4 with two RKI's in his first game back from Colorado and his failed attempt to join Ski Patrol. It's OK Jim, maybe you can join Kickball Patrol.

Andrew went 2 for 4 with 1 RKI and also earned both the victory and save on the mound. In honor of the pitching stats accumulation, he is planning on growing a Rollie Fingers moustache. (He will show you the facial hair thing Jim.)

Allie won the coveted Rolaids Bunter of the Week Award, going 4 for 4 with 4 bunt singles. Allie said she has bunting since she was a small child, but this was her first perfect game.

Cleanup kicker Matt Seal showed why he was in the middle, driving several long balls just foul. If we had lost, we definitely could have called for a review on some of those.

Jason also had a big game at the plate, going 3 for 3, scoring a run and knocking in another. He also psyched out Red Balls and Vodka by pounding Red Bulls and vodkas and doing a Ben Roethlingsbergererer impression.

Megan was also hot at the plate, going 3 for 4 and kicking in the final run of the game. Megan also did her best Jake Taylor and did some good trash talking behind the plate, showing Rexman who was boss.

Mark went 1 for 3, including a single that kept the rally going in Blue's go-ahead fifth inning. He also got the U.L. Washington Award for playing multiple positions, even without a toothpick.

Jeff also went 1 for 3, and made several key catches in the outfield, intimidating the Red Balls from trying to kick the ball against this outfield.

Angie again provided spark at defense, hauling in several force-outs at second base and was able to scream louder than any runners screaming toward her. She also went 1 for 3 and scored the go-ahead run.

Meanwhile, Noah proved to be a surprise the Red Balls weren't expecting as he pitched three scoreless inning and earned the win. This guy should definitely be on the add list for people playing fantasy kickball.

Coach Nate was appearing in his first game of the year, and he did show some signs of rust when he gave Jim the green light and got him thrown out at home. However, he did coach the team into successfully letting that bunt teeter foul and went 1 for 2 with a run scored.

Zack also made his debut with the team, even if he didn't get to the game until the sixth inning. Nonetheless, he showed those Red Balls who was boss when they tried to kick at the new guy and he calmly snagged the ball.

Finally Kate did a good job of filling in on short notice, and showed Red Balls and Vodka that we are a team that is not afraid to get a little bloody, even if it means executing a full somersault on the way to first base.

This Week in Kickball: March 16

Hi all-

Hope everyone is off to a good start to their week. The dreary weather is supposed to clear out tomorrow morning and all the Maryland fans should be in good spirits for the Terps' inclusion in the bracket.

Game time for this week is 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Latrobe Park, Upper Field 2. If you've never been there, you can park in the school parking lot or along most of Fort Ave. (just pay attention to signs).

It sounds like most everybody has played before, but if you want a refresher on the rules, link here. There are not too many new rules this year, but here is a short version of what they talked about at the meeting:

• for those who were with us last year, the most pertinent is that any team can now be penalized for the bench standing too close to the field. Just remember to watch this.

• the league said there will be random roster checks, so bring a photo ID if you can, just in case we get checked

• If two runners are on the same base at the same time, the fielder has the choice of tagging either runner. The tagged runner is out, the other is safe.

• Every team has turn in a lineup before the game starts. Angie will take care of this, I'm only mentioning because they said they were going to be stricter about following the lineups this year so everyone needs to pay attention.

Sorry that it didn't work out so that everyone had a chance to meet before the first game. We will have shirts at the field for the first game, we are sapphire blue. We are the same color as last year, so if you want to wear a shirt from last year, that is fine too.

This week, we play "Kick in the Box," not to be confused with the SNL video. They were also off last week, so it will be Opening Day for both of us.

Memo from the coach

(the following message was also mailed to the team mailing list)

Hi everyone --

We are just one week away from the start of the season, on Wednesday March 11 (unless we get a bye the first week).

The final schedule is due to be out by "late this week," which I take to mean this Friday. I will get you the link and have the schedule up on the blog as as soon as that happens.

Today's important news is that we have added four free agents to round out the team -- Atlie, Jeff, Michael and Noah. Also joining the team this year for those who don't know them is Matt Seal (part of the Towson U. alum contingency) and Jackie Ernest (Jason's sister).

In order for everyone to have a chance to meet each other I am scheduling two events:

• Those who can make it are invited to a team Happy Hour on Friday at our official post-game headquarters — City Limits Sports Bar, which is across the street from where we play our games, Latrobe Park. I will be wearing my sapphire blue jersey and a Minnesota Twins hat for those who don't know me. We will plan to start at 6:30 p.m. and hang out wherever.

I am going to the coaches meeting on Thursday night so I will also update you on any new rules on Friday.

• Due to a revised forecast with no rain, we will again go for practice on Sunday at Latrobe Park from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.ish.

Any questions? Shoot me an e-mail or give me a call. Looking forward to the weekend and a new season!

Official communications from the league office

Well, weather canceled practice for the second straight week, but I guess we can't expect much else from March. Smarch is supposed to be even worse this year.

That said, our league office sent out an e-mail at 1 a.m. this Sunday with the following announcements:

1) The league rules meeting is this Thursday, March 5 at 7 p.m. No one really needs to go but me. There are league-sponsored Coors Light specials following that meeting at Don't Know and Pickled Parrot. I believe Don't Know is still under boycott status for most of our team so not sure whether we will be going there.

2) The final spring schedule is supposed to be released the same night.

No word on our free agents and given the forecast I'm not sure about the next date for a potential practice. More updates as they come.

Spring Training starts on Sunday

We Just Blue Ourselves is set to open spring camp this weekend with a practice at 1 p.m. this Sunday, probably at Latrobe Park.

Coming off a sometimes rocky 1-6 premiere season, Blue will look to turn around some of last year's close losses with the addition of two new players, Matt Seal, introduced at last week's team Happy Hour, and Jackie Ernest, sister of power kicker Jason Crook.

The team is also returning a majority of its core, and appear to have gotten star center fielder Zack Seprodi to come back for another year. However, a deal with shortstop Matt Marsden has yet to emerge.

Coach Sandstrom may also pull off an opponent to scrimmage on Sunday, however, those plans have yet to emerge.

Before there is Spring Training, there is Happy Hour

The spring 2008 season is less than six weeks away, but the temperatures may be still a little chilly to take the fields for practice.

Not to fret, there's plenty of time to rebuild that team chemistry — starting with the registration Happy Hour next Wednesday, Feb, 4, at Mother's from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

It looks like Devin will be taking the spring season off due to his work schedule, but I hope everyone else will be able to make it back.

Taking his place will be rookie Matt Seal, a kicker who can find the gaps in the defense.

Cost is $55 per person this season. Payment due by mid-February.

We could possibly use another free agent or two, so if you know someone who wants to join our spunky squad, let us know.

Here's the responses I've got from the e-mail I sent out a few weeks ago:
In: Nate, Allie, Jim, Matt Seal, Megan
Out: Devin
Don't Know: Adrian, Andrew, Becca, Jason, Lori, Mark, Matt Marsden, Zack

Hope to see you at the Happy Hour!
